Tottenham
were edged out of fourth place by their London rivals in the
last day of Premiership action for the 2005/2006 season.
Tottenham were defeated at Upton Park, while Arsenal won
convincingly at Highbury 4-2 against Wigan. Tottenham
had held fourth place since December.
There
remains some controversy surrounding the match as 10 players
fell ill on the eve of the match. There is speculation
of food poisoning, however nothing has yet been confirmed.
Despite the
setback, the Tottenham players played and gave it their all.
West Ham took the early lead with a goal from Carl Fletcher
in the 10th minute. Jermain Defoe equalized in the
35th minute. Paul Robinson saved a Teddy Sheringham
penalty to keep the Spurs in the game. Yossi Benayoun
scored the winner for West Ham in the 80th minute.
Paul
Stalteri had picked up an injury in the game against Bolton
and was unable to play.
Tottenham
qualified for the UEFA Cup next season.

Aaron Lennon
scored the lone goal for Tottenham to keep the Spurs in
fourth place. Tottenham will be guaranteed a fourth
place finish if they win next weekend at West Ham.
It was the
last home game of the season at White Hart Lane. The
Spurs went with only two defeats at home all season.

Tottenham
remain in control of fourth place after a tie at Highbury on
Saturday April 22nd. It was a derby that lived up to
expectations and one that fans will certainly remember as
the two teams met for the last time at Highbury.
Robbie Keane
scored in the 66th minute to put the Spurs in the lead.
Tottenham had dominated most of the first half and had
already had a few chances to open the score.
Thierry
Henry did not start and was substituted into the match for
Van Persie in the 62nd minute. He was the player who
ended up levelling the score in the 84th minute.
Tottenham
were reduced to ten men in the 85th minute when Edgar Davids
was sent for his second bookable offence.
Paul
Stalteri played 90 minutes.
